Pueblo enfermo, also known as Pueblo enfermo de Alcides, is a 1630-1650 historical novel written by Pedro Calderon de la Barca. This novel is mostly about the life of Alcides Martel, a Spanish mayor, poet and "philosopher". It was his most famous novel, and is also the one that, more than any other, made him famous.
Pueblo enfermo was originally written for the stage. Calderon de la Barca was a dramatist whose own plays have been lost to history. Pueblo enfermo, on the other hand, is an example of the "Autorretrato" or "Self-Portrait", where the author was himself the character he was portraying.
It was first published in 1630, and has been in print ever since. In fact, today it is one of the most frequently published books in the world.
Some people refer to Pueblo enfermo as the "Spanish Ulysses" because of its structure. It tells the story of Alcides Martel through six different sections, or books, and a preface. The preface is basically a summary of the story as a whole.
In the first section, "Del diluvio", we are told the beginning of the story, and we learn that Alcides Martel is the main character. His father and grandfather were also noblemen who were close to the King and Queen. In his youth, Alcides Martel is involved in a fight and accidentally kills his friend. He is sent to prison, but is saved by an eagle.
After a series of misadventures (while in prison and in some military adventure), Alcides finally ends up in Granada where he is captured by an African and sold into slavery.
The story of Alcides Martel continues with "Del Nido del Gallo", "Del Ocio", "Del Amor", "Del Cerebro" and the last section, "Del Amor y la Verdad".
